Not every early gap needs one
When a baby tooth is lost earlier than expected, the teeth beside it can drift into the gap. That can leave less room for the adult tooth growing underneath. A space maintainer holds that room open. Whether your child needs one depends on which tooth is missing, how their teeth are developing and how much space is left.
How we decide and design it
Dr. Samreen examines the remaining teeth and may take an X-ray to see the adult tooth developing underneath. The design depends on where the gap is and which teeth can support the appliance. We’ll tell you whether it’s fixed or removable, and talk about whether your child can keep it clean and come back for reviews.
Living with it day to day
At the fitting we check the appliance and show you and your child how to clean around it. Learn what loosening or a sore spot looks like. Don’t try to bend it or push it back into place at home. If something seems wrong, bring your child in so we can sort it before it damages a tooth or hurts the mouth.
Reviews as the adult tooth comes in
A space maintainer isn’t something you fit and forget. As the teeth come through, it needs checking, may need adjusting, and has to be removed at the right time. It keeps space open for one tooth. It doesn’t fix crowding elsewhere in the mouth, and it can’t promise your child will never need braces.

Questions about space maintainers
Does every lost baby tooth need a space maintainer?
No. It depends on which tooth it is, how early it was lost and how the adult tooth underneath is developing.
What if it comes loose?
Call us for advice and keep any piece that comes off somewhere safe. Please don’t try to glue it back in yourself.
Will it bother my child?
It may feel strange for the first few days. If it rubs or causes a sore spot that doesn’t settle, let us know and we’ll check it.
This is general information. What’s right for your tooth depends on what Dr. Samreen finds when she examines it.
