Clinical review: Dr. Samreen Ejaz, BDS, RDS ·
How it differs from an ordinary crown
A normal crown sits on your own tooth after it has been trimmed. An implant crown is attached to the implant through a small connecting part instead. So as well as choosing the shade, we plan around the implant’s position and type, the connection, and how you’ll clean underneath and around it.
If your implant was placed somewhere else
We’ll check the implant and the gum around it first. Please bring whatever records you have, especially the implant system details. The parts have to match that exact system, and we can’t reliably identify it just by looking at it on an X-ray. Without that information, we may not be able to restore it.
Making and fitting the crown
We take impressions or a scan to record where the implant sits. The crown is then made to fit the space, touch the neighbouring teeth properly and meet your bite. At the fitting, Dr. Samreen checks it, explains how it’s held in place and shows you how to clean around it. Sometimes a trial fit or small adjustments are needed first.
Keeping it healthy
Clean around the crown the way we show you, because its shape near the gum differs from a natural tooth. Come for your reviews and tell us if it feels loose, your bite changes, or the gum bleeds or swells. Don’t try to tighten it or glue a crown back on yourself. The crown or connection may need attention even when the implant itself is fine.
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
Questions about implant-supported crowns
Can you put a crown on an implant I had done elsewhere?
Possibly. We need to examine it, see your records and confirm the implant system and that the parts are available.
Will the crown need replacing one day?
It can wear, chip or loosen over time, like other crowns. We’ll talk about looking after it when we plan it.
This is general information. What’s right for your tooth depends on what Dr. Samreen finds when she examines it.
