What fluoride does
Fluoride helps keep the enamel on your teeth strong and better able to resist decay. We may suggest a professional application if your checkup shows your teeth are at higher risk than usual. It protects teeth, but it can’t fill a hole. A cavity where tooth structure has already been lost still needs a proper repair.
Who it might help
Dr. Samreen looks at recent decay, exposed roots, a dry mouth and how much fluoride you already use. For children, age and whether they can sit comfortably for it also matter. Tell us which toothpaste or mouthwash you use at home, and whether you or your child has ever reacted to a dental material, so we can check the product first.
What happens at the appointment
We clean and dry the teeth, then apply the fluoride product in the right amount for it. We’ll tell you whether we’re using a varnish or another type. When you can eat, drink and brush again depends on that product, so follow the instructions we give you on the day rather than general advice you’ve heard elsewhere.
Making it count
Fluoride does more alongside good habits at home. Keep brushing, and cut down on sugary snacks and drinks between meals, especially for children. How often you need another application depends on your risk and whether it changes over time. If a tooth keeps hurting, come back for a check. Pain needs a proper diagnosis, not just another coat of fluoride.
BEFORE YOUR APPOINTMENT
Questions about fluoride application
Will fluoride fix a hole in my child’s tooth?
It can help with very early changes in the enamel. Once a cavity has formed and tooth structure is lost, the tooth may need a filling. The examination tells us which it is.
Is fluoride only for children?
No. Adults can be at higher risk of decay too, especially where roots are exposed. We decide based on your own mouth, not your age.
What if my child has reacted to something at the dentist before?
Tell us before the appointment. We check the product against any past reactions before we use it.
This is general information. What’s right for your tooth depends on what Dr. Samreen finds when she examines it.
