Missing a Tooth? Dental Implants, Bridges and Dentures Compared
Published · Dental Stories, Bahawalpur
Losing a tooth affects more than your smile. Neighbouring teeth can drift into the gap, the opposite tooth can over-erupt, and chewing on one side puts more load on the rest. There are three main ways to replace a missing tooth, and the right one depends on your mouth, your health and your priorities.
Dental implants
An implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone, where it acts like a root. After it heals and bonds to the bone, a crown is fitted on top. Implants don’t rely on the neighbouring teeth, and they help keep the bone in that area. They do need enough healthy bone, good gum health and usually several months from start to finish. Smoking and uncontrolled diabetes raise the risk of problems.
Dental bridges
A bridge fills the gap with a false tooth held by crowns on the teeth either side. It is fixed, doesn’t come out and can be completed faster than an implant. The trade-off is that the neighbouring teeth are trimmed to hold the crowns, which makes the most sense when those teeth already need crowns anyway.
Dentures
A denture is a removable plate carrying one or more false teeth. Partial dentures replace a few teeth; complete dentures replace a full arch. They are the least invasive option and often the most affordable, but they can feel bulky at first and need care and periodic adjustment.
How to choose
- Want something fixed that doesn’t touch other teeth? An implant, if your bone and health allow.
- Neighbouring teeth already heavily filled? A bridge may make sense.
- Several teeth missing, or surgery not suitable? A denture, possibly implant-supported later.
An examination and X-ray are needed before any recommendation.
Questions to ask
- What does each option involve for my mouth specifically?
- How many visits, and how long overall?
- What is the total cost, including the crown or denture itself?
- What maintenance will it need?
